John McLenan
This cartoon depicts travelers arriving in New York. The top hat, suit attire, and parasol on and with them are all items that were common for those of the upper class while the banjo was typically associated with slaves. The cartoon, published in Harper’s Weekly in late 1862, shows former slaves arriving in New York in front of a sign that basically states that emancipation will not happen until at least 1900; this could be due to the cartoonist or general population that was not ready for the emancipation or did not believe it would happen.
