This cartoon was shown in Harper’s Weekly just after the 1864 election. Both the caption and the image play on Abraham Lincoln’s height. Lincoln was just over six feet tall. He was tall for his time and the cartoon uses his height to its advantage. The image stretches from the top to the bottom of the page. Though Lincoln is stretched to fit the page fully, his body remains in proportion. His height becomes a pun for his long stay in office.
