Grant Turning Lee’s Flank

Artist Unknown

Grant Turning Lee’s Flank uses two important figures to explain the rising strength of Union forces. While the cartoon does not include many words, it gives both a history of the war and a comical commentary. Typically, “flanking” is used as a military term to describe an attack from the side of the opposing force. However, this cartoon uses the term to describe turning Lee’s literal flank.
